Research about cable’s highest-rated entertainment show in 2008 revealed some complaints television executives rarely see about their programs — not enough s’mores, bonfires and water fights.

The made-for-TV movie was Disney Channel’s wildly successful ” Camp Rock,” which starred Disney darlings the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato and drew an impressive audience of 10 million viewers. Audiences enjoyed the show, they just wanted more of the joy and antics of a typical summer camp experience.

As “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” premieres Friday — and then takes over the network for the Labor Day weekend with singalongs, dance-alongs, cast interviews and encores airing through Monday night — consider the s’mores situation solved.

“Something had been gnawing at me about the first movie, even though it was a hit,” said Disney Channel Entertainment President Gary Marsh, who ordered the audience research about the original program. “I just felt like we could do it better and bolder. We had a first chance to make a second impression.”

A sequel was even easier to support considering Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, stars of regular Disney Channel shows and hugely successful recording artists, had grown even more popular in the teen and tween universe since the original launched. They’d be given more well-developed parts — Lovato’s character steps up as a leader, for instance, and Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas would have individual stories instead of being perpetually attached at the hip.

“It was so much bigger this time, with scenes that felt like there were 100 dancers, where the first movie had 12 or 15,” said Kevin Jonas, the oldest of the performing trio at 22. “My brothers and I didn’t have to do too much dancing, though, which is a good thing. Trust me.”

Kids who go to sleep-away camp look forward all school year to friends they see only in summer, not showering all that often and freedom. Parents love camp, too, but for different reasons.

The camp themes of good versus evil and fake versus genuine play out in Disney Channel’s “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” Friday, Sept. 3.

The sequel to “Camp Rock,” a huge hit two years ago, reunites the Jonas Brothers as the band Connect 3, with Demi Lovato as Mitchie. There are fledgling, chaste romances and the lesson that leadership requires cooperation and hard work.

The plot pitches talented teens against other talented teens, culminating in a singing and dancing competition with high stakes. An interesting aside is that the audience watching the competition at the end of the movie is made up of real fans. They were found when the Jonas Brothers and Lovato Twittered the need for extras. Within three minutes, 60,000 people had applied for the 1,500 slots, says a Disney publicist, and by that night the traffic had reached 1 million, crashing the server.

Lovato (“Sonny With a Chance”), whom the channel has been grooming for stardom, is aggressively earnest as she sings and dances. Though there’s plenty for JoBro fans to enjoy, this is Lovato’s movie.

“This was the first film I was not totally overshadowed by them,” Lovato says from a Manhattan hotel room. “Going into the film, I knew this time would be different. I couldn’t get away with not doing my best performance.”

The movie is better than it needs to be, considering it has a built-in audience. Lovato, who has been touring with the Jonas Brothers, was thrust into the frenzy swirling around the brothers.

“Their fans are supportive, and they are supportive of me,” she says. “It’s crazy to arrive at 4 in the morning and there are people inside the hotel.”

On a rainy day in New York, the brothers are sequestered in a hotel. Gigantic bodyguards, placed every so many yards in the hotel hallways, keep watch for overzealous fans. The brothers, who get along easily with one another, laugh as they recall their camp days.

Camp, says Kevin Jonas, is “amazing. You never want to lose your love of camp.” He attended camp for nine years, Joe for seven and Nick for four. They all say they love it, and Joe’s favorite memory is “the last day of camp, there was a giant relay race.”

Kevin recalls boys daring one another. “You’d eat an entire onion by yourself,” he says. Joe adds, “Or you would eat a whole piece of Spam.”

“Camp is so universal,” Kevin says. “It buys that sense of togetherness. You have camp friends that you only see at camp and couldn’t see an entire year.”

Camp Rock is for kids who want to be rock stars. A rival rock-wannabe camp, Camp Star, sets up business across the lake and threatens Camp Rock’s existence.

“At Camp Rock, everyone has grown up a little more,” Kevin says. “Joe and Nick and I are in it more, and we take on a leadership role, the ownership of the camp — we feel a responsibility. You feel part of the journey — wanting the camp to survive.”

The camp owner is on the brink of closing Camp Rock as counselors and kids defect to Camp Star, but Mitchie rallies the troops to save the sweet, no-frills camp they love.

“The fact that it’s tons of different stories and has a moral to it,” is her takeaway, Lovato says. “And being the right kind of leader. She becomes very bossy. I remember girls can be super bossy. Girls can learn from that.”

Sure, the kids break into song and dance at any given moment. And it’s about as realistic as these situations are in any musical. But remember, Disney ushered in the model for movie musicals for kids with “High School Musical.” The choreography is devoid of sexuality, and to understand what an accomplishment that is, tune into most music videos and see how comfortable parents are allowing tweens to watch.

“Dancing is something I have always been passionate about,” Lovato says. “I started with jazz, tap and ballet, and when I hit about 10, I started taking hip-hop.”

She can also belt a number, evident as Mitchie leads everyone in “Brand New Day,” a catchy tune co-written by Kara DioGuardi of “American Idol” fame.

There’s something here for parents who know their album covers. The brothers pose briefly as musicians from iconic LPs. There are nods to such cover art as Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and Crosby, Stills & Nash’s first album.

One of the best songs is Nate (Nick Jonas) singing, “Introducing Me” with the lyrics of: “I eat cheese only on pizza, except in a homemade quesadilla, otherwise it smells like cheese … .”

Sure, the movie’s title includes the word “final,” but the ending, which will not be revealed here, leaves open the possibility of sequels.

‘Camp Rock’ was such a sensational hit for the Disney Channel, they smartly decided to get the gang back together for ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam‘ (premieres Fri., Sept. 3, 8PM ET). But something’s standing in the way of Mitchie and the boys having a rockin’ summer: rival Camp Star across the lake. The whole thing ends in a musical battle to end all battles, deciding which is the better camp.

It’s been two years since Camp Rock was unveiled to the world, creating a star out of cheerful teen singer Demi Lovato and making even bigger stars out of the Jonas Brothers. Camp Rock delivered some of the Disney Channel’s best ratings, spawning a bestselling sound-track -and now, it’s rare to go more than a day without reading a news story about the film’s young stars.

So it came as no surprise that Disney was eager to make a sequel, and, on Sept. 3, Lovato and the Jonas Brothers return for Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. As is the case with most sequels, the musical numbers are bigger and the stakes are higher.

“We have a much bigger budget now,” Joe Jonas says. “We haven’t stayed on the same set for more than three days at a time, and that’s really exciting … and the inside sets are absolutely massive.”

Adds Lovato: “We definitely have more dancing in Camp Rock 2. We made the routines even bigger and more fun.”

But although there are still plenty of upbeat song-and-dance numbers, Camp Rock is in trouble, threatened by the glitz and glam of the new Camp Star across the lake. A musical showdown is imminent, but the situation is made more complicated when Nick’s character, Nate, develops a star-crossed romance with a Camp Star camper.

Nick admits he was a little bit intimidated by his bigger role in The Final Jam, but found his work on the family’s Disney Channel sitcom JONAS helped prepare him for the challenge.

“We learned a lot on the set of the show,” Nick says, “and we feel really comfortable in front of the camera now.”

Meanwhile, Joe and Demi’s characters, Shane and Mitchie, struggle to develop their burgeoning relationship while still keeping Camp Rock afloat.

“Shane has gotten a lot nicer,” Joe says. “He’s a lot more confident and finds happiness in wanting to know happiness and getting to know Mitchie.”

But the real question is: Will Shane and Mitchie finally kiss in The Final Jam?

“You’ll have to wait and see,” Lovato says.

Lest any Kevin Jonas fans worry he’s getting left out, Kevin says his character “becomes a counsellor for the junior rock band, to father them through the ups and downs.”

Just as their characters have matured since Camp Rock, Lovato and the Jonas Brothers have grown up themselves. Lovato has become a pop princess in her own right, Nick formed his own band, Nick Jonas and the Administration, Joe is developing his acting career and Kevin is a married man.

Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam airs Friday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. on Family Channel.

The movie was enough of a treat, but the lucky Jonas Brothers fans who attended the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam premiere in New York Wednesday got a whole lot more than that.

Following the screening at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato emerged for a surprise performance of the romantic duet “Wouldn’t Change a Thing,” from the movie’s soundtrack, with Joe’s brothers Kevin and Nick playing backup.

The impromptu concert was a hit, judging by the number of girls in the audience shrieking at the top of their lungs.

Earlier in the event, on the red carpet, Lovato talked about how it’s been working with Joe Jonas since their breakup in May. “We’ve obviously had our ups and downs, but no matter what, we’ll be best friends for a long time,” she told PEOPLE.

Lovato, who turns 18 on Friday, also expressed her gratitude to Joe, 21, for recently threatening legal action against a blogger who posted a story with alleged falsehoods about their relationship.

“All three of them will defend me, because they’re my brothers, they have my back,” Lovato said. “And I’ll defend them any day, too.”

Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam will premiere on the Disney Chanel on Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. ET and air the following three nights at the same time.

Leave it to Demi Lovato to recover from a mid-concert fall with elegance.

The 17-year-old star of Sonny with a Chance was in the middle of performing “Remember December” at a recent show for the Camp Rock 2 tour when she tripped and fell to her knees. Always the professional, Demi played off the fall flawlessly and continued singing without missing a beat.

Watch the video below. [Falls @ 1:01]

Demi is currently on tour with the Jonas Brothers and she’ll have to celebrate her entrance into adulthood on the road when she turns 18 on August 20.

The teen queen was most recently in the news after a gossip site reported that she was still “friends with benefits” with ex-beau Joe Jonas while the two were on tour together. Joe denied the claim and said that he would be seeking legal action against the blog that reported the rumor.

Demi and the JoBros are currently gearing up for the premiere of Camp Rock 2 in New York City. However, Demi, Jemi, and JoBro fans will have to wait until September 3 to see the actual film.
